Open Source Initiative is an organization dedicated to promoting an open source softwear.
The organization begun in February 1998, when it was founded by Bruce Perens and Eric S. Raymond. Eric S. Rymond was the president of OSI until Febuary 2005, when Michael Tiemann became president. Tiemann is the
current president.
The movement began in 1998 by Jon Hall, Larry Augustin, Eric S. Raymond, and Bruce Perens.
The founders were unsatisfied with the softwears that were beeing sold at excessive prices, so they begun the "free software" movement. They hoped that open source would become a more persuasive argument to businesses. Raymond's commented
"If you want to change the world, you have to co-opt the people who write the big checks." The beginning of the open-source movement coincided with the dot-com boom in 1998─2000, and grew popular with Linux and the formation of many open-source companies. The movement was also caught by the mainstream software industry, some software companies such as Corel, Sun Microsystems, and even IBM started offering establishing open source in their computers.
The organization was suspended from operation as a California Corporation in 2009, and now has a current status of "active".
